HISTORY

Maire is the youngest child and only daughter of a high-ranking Megamian family. All her life, she was spoiled because she was not only the baby of the family, but the only girl. She was allowed to do almost anything she wanted, whenever she wanted. This led to her only receiving the most basic of education, as she found lessons a bore. She was always much more interesting in playing games, especially dress-up in her mother’s clothes. She had all the finest things, whether she really needed them or not. In short, she was totally unprepared for the path her family was about to set her on.

Maire had always known of the tradition her family had, of sending the oldest daughter to become a Holy Sister in the Temples of the Dragon Gods, but she had never thought that it would actually happen to her. After all, she was the pampered princess and her parents adored her, they would never send her away. Besides, she may be the oldest daughter, but she was also the only daughter, and she thought that would change things. It didn’t. When she was 15 years old, after many tantrums, she was put in a carriage and sent to the nearby temple.

Her lack of education and her own nature both made her an unlikely Sister, but once there it was discovered that she had quite a talent for it. But she didn’t work on this talent, only ever doing what she had too and no more. And even then, she fought her duties ever step of the way, eventually leading to an acolyte, Terrance, being assigned to watch over her and make sure she did her duties. She was immediately resentful of Terrance, especially because he had the freedom she didn’t, to choose his own path. Plus, she still retained her high-class snobbery and disliked being forced to associate with a commoner.

One year later, Maire is seen as quite a prodigy by those around her but she herself has had her dreams of the future completely destroyed and now pretends to not care about anything, except surviving her life, day by day.

However, after a failed attempt to run away from the convent, after which she was sent back by her family, paired with a trip to visit the Altar of the Dragons, Maire has decided to make an effort in being part of the clergy, at least until she is eighteen. She has also begun to see Terrance in a new light, realizing that he is not a horrible person and in fact could one day become a friend. When Terrance was injured in a bandit attack, arranged by her one-time-friend-turned-enemy Gilbert, she finally began to realize how much she actually cares about him.

However, events conspired to cause the pair to fight once again, leaving Maire very confused, especially considering Terrance had admitted to being in love with her. She grew increasingly frustrated with her situation, which led to numourous fights with others on the journal. Now, on a pilgrimage to a temple in Norey, Maire is trying to sort things out about her life, while also attempting to gain some control over her temper. For the most part, she has been fairly successful in this attempt, however her continuing frustration with Terrance caused her to lose control and end up in yet another fight. However, this fight had a silver lining, since in the end it provided a catalyst towards a new development in their relationship, one that no one can predict the consequences of.

When Maire and Terrance reached Colndor however, their relationship exploded on itself as Terrance, in a rather misguided attempt to help Maire, ended up drugging her and taking her to the home of Crow, Lark, and Kooly. Maire was rather upset by this and, as Terrance couldn't provide her with a reason that she could accept, turned all her rage back on towards Terrance.

The pair did eventually reach Norey, where they met Father Remmington. This high priest took a strong liking to Maire and tried to push her to choose her destiny: whether she would leave the church or stay in it forever. After quite a bit of thought, Maire chose to stay, realizing that she can't go back to what she was and that part of her doesn't want to go back either. She then traveled back to Megam, carrying a letter from Father Remmington to the higher ups in Lucre, unbeknownst that its contents would change her life.

The letter was delivered in Lucre to Sister Freya, one of the Guardians of the Altar. In it, Father Remmington recommended that Maire be made a high priestess, firmly on the path to becoming a Guardian herself. His request was fulfilled. Now a high priestess, Maire is freed from the more menial labours of a mere sister, yet she has a long road ahead of her and many things to learn before she can advance to the highest position in the Church.

This event also has caused her to be seperated at length from Terrance for the first time in almost two years. This seperation has been a rather odd adjustment for them both, though it does seem to actually have done their relationship, what that it is, some good. Maire is now concentrating on her studies, trying to make the best of them that she can. Though it is often a struggle, due to a mix of her not trying, not being prepared for such an environment, and not being overly blessed in the area of intelligence, she hasn't quite...at least not yet.

Due to the continued frustration that Maire showed as a result of her lessons, it was suggested by Father Eron, one of the Guardians of the Altar, that she and her teacher Elliot might enjoy a trip to the Papan Temple, home of the trio of sisters who also have journals: Mathilda, Raetha, and, of course, Lillian. Maire wasn't sure what to expect from this trip, but she did hope to enjoy it somewhat. And, to her surprise, she did, as she found that Papan actually is quite nice, though she wasn't willing to easily admit it.

In the middle of her trip however she discovered that Terrance had sent a rose to her and Lillian on Rose Day. Devastated, she cut all ties to him and asked Elliot if they could go home: not to Lucre, but to her family's house.

Unlike Maire, Elliot had the foresight to ask permission for them to travel to Valens, a request which was allowed. Maire was able to spend a fair amount of time home, even celebrating her seventeenth birthday there. However eventually she did have to return to Lucre and to her duties as a high priestess in training for greater things.

Unfortunately for Maire, her current actions had earned disapproval from her superiours, who decided that a penance was in order. Starting during the Autumn Pilgramage, Maire was made to work in the kitchens near the Altar and also was not allowed to wear any clothing other than a simple, white shift. Needless to say, Maire was rather displeased with this, but eventually she decided it would just be better to carry on and hope that time went faster than she expected it to.

There was however a bright light to these current events: Maire began to be courted by Lord Destin of House Lysel, whom Maire took an immediate liking too. She began to focus much of her energy on this new development, while also taking time to continue to argue with Terrance and incur more displeasure from those in charge of her education and advancement. Gradually however, she began to realize that she had to work at moving past this pain.

Once Maire's penance was over, she was given the task of leading services in a smaller temple in Lucre. She took to this charge quite well and began to quite enjoy doing it. She continues to be very excited about her courtship with Destin, while also finally feeling that she can put the mess of her relationship with Terrance behind her.

While Maire was in this new position, it was arranged for her to have a new teacher. Brother Emery was chosen for this task, a decision Maire found strange and somewhat insulting, given that he was of lower rank. The lessons did not go well and they eventually led to Maire being given a new assignment, to help with a local convent, and Emery leaving the Church completely.

Maire was still at the convent when Destin proposed to her and she eagerly accepted. Plans began to be made for a May ceremony.

But Maire's ties to Terrance were still not over. After Terrance murdered Chiel, Maire was the one chosen to go and inform his family. This task was the hardest thing she had ever had to do, not only because of the enormity of what she had to do but because she still has never quite come to terms with her own feelings when it comes to Terrance. She was very relieved when she was finally able to return home and resume her wedding plans. She also has had a taste of what greater responsibility she might have one day and how to deal with it to the best of her abilities.

PERSONALITY

Maire has always been ruled by her emotions, though she has learned quite a bit about how to keep them under control. This is especially noticeable when it comes to her anger and resentment, as she has been able to put most of that behind her (or at least she believes she has).

Above all else, Maire wants to be loved and approved of. She doesn't believe that she is a bad person and she is very upset when she thinks that others hold this view. She also accepts that she is not always a great person, but she does try to do what is right most of the time. She is more likely to do what is considered the "good" thing when she believes that it will make her look good as well, as she has always been quite self-centred.

Because of what she has experienced in her life, Maire is very slow to trust people. She has been hurt most by the people she loved best and is terrified of it happening again.

APPEARANCE

Maire is of average height and build, though she falls more on the voluptuous side when it comes to the latter. She has strawberry blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She likes to wear expensive clothing, though her station in life does not always allow it. She also mostly wears white, even though she dislikes the colour.
